The formula
- Stride length ≈ height × 0.415. A common rule of thumb for walking; your real stride depends on pace and leg length.
- Distance = steps × stride. 1 mile = 1.609 km.
- Calories ≈ 0.04 kcal × steps × (your weight ÷ 70 kg). An approximation for walking at a normal pace — pace, slope and fitness change the real number.

FAQ
Questions, answered
How many steps are in 1 km?
Roughly 1,300–1,500 for an adult walking at a normal pace. With the 0.415 × height rule, a 170 cm person has a stride of about 71 cm, so 1 km is about 1,420 steps. Taller people need fewer steps.
How are the calories worked out?
With a common rule of thumb: about 0.04 kcal per step for a 70 kg (154 lb) adult, scaled by your weight. It ignores pace, slope and fitness, so treat it as a rough estimate, not a measurement.
How far is 10,000 steps?
About 7 km (4.4 miles) for a 170 cm adult. Enter your own height above for a closer number.
